Biography

Tina Redman (born in June 1994) is a South African actress, presenter, beatboxer, and model. She hosts an educational web series, We’re Queer My Dear (WQMD), alongside Shenay O’Brien, Tina Redman, Jaco Smith-Venter, and Jodi Deerling.

The Professional beatboxer worked with Ford Figo on their advertisement for their model. She also worked with Cadbury Bubbly Chocolate on their elevator advertisement.

Tina Redman was born in June 1994 in Kokstad in Harry Gwala District Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.

The beatboxer became interested in animations, voiceovers, and the creative freedom of telling stories. Tina would do Speech and Drama from seven years and started to win competitions at eight years.

Tina started mimicking cartoon characters she saw on television and spent hours perfecting her voice. She would continue to work on it until she matched the beats she heard in the music.

Eventually, she became fluent in copying the sounds of drums and snares. At first, beatboxing was a hobby for her and her peers until she started entering competitions.

Education

Tina Redman matriculated from Durban Girls High School in 2012. She obtained a BA in Drama and Film Studies at the University of Pretoria in 2015.

Redman qualified as a digital content creator at Live magazine and completed their full internship.

Career

Redman entered many talent shows to find new ways to explore beatboxing. She won SABC 1’s Battle Station Award as the first female beatboxer to enter the show. She received the title of Master.

Tina also had the opportunity to open for brands. She has worked with celebrated artists like Ricky Rick, Nadia Nakai, Miss Cosmo, Rouge, and Kwesta. She became the only known female beatboxer from South Africa.

Former YO-TV presenter Sade inspired the SABC 1 Reno Race presenter. Her being a genuine queer person of color on TV in South Africa in the 2000s interested Tina.

The highlight of her career was getting her dream job on TV. She was preparing to shoot season 3 of Reno Race in 2018.

Scandal

In 2023, Tina lodged a formal complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission. It followed an alleged racial-profiling incident. She took to social media to share that Dis-Chem racially profiled them. She said security officials frisked them but did not do so to their white partner.

Dis-Chem allegedly falsely accused Redman of stealing fake eyelashes. They did not show the footage that incriminated them. 

Redman says the person who claimed to have seen them stealing refused to apologize or acknowledge a mistake. 

However, Dis-Chem claimed its operational director sent her an apology last week. The actress claimed she received no emails. She has now complained to the SA Human Rights Commission.
