Strong winds have caused significant damage in the Stellenbosch Municipality in the Western Cape.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued several warnings, including a negative storm surge and a level 9 warning for disruptive rain.

STRONG WINDS BATTER STELLENBOSCH MUNICIPALITY

On Sunday, 7 April, the Stellenbosch Municipality said the storm damage across several areas is significant.

The municipality said it deals with numerous fires, fallen trees, electricity outages, and roofs blown off.

“Please report any service delivery issues to the Control Room so we can address them. While we can’t attend to everything simultaneously, we’ll do our best. Many outages are related to Eskom services; we’ll notify them accordingly. Our prayers are with everyone’s safety,” the municipality added.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch Wine Routes Manager Elmarie Rabe has urged people visiting the region to call ahead of any bookings or plans to ensure that facilities are open as current conditions are unpredictable.

High winds have caused substantial disruption around the Cape, with Stellenbosch farms particularly hit hard. However, many wine estates are unaffected and remain open to guests.

“Authorities have taken precautions to close some roads, so it’s wise to check your routes before departure on your visit,” Rabe said.
