Nathi Nhleko (born Nkosinathi Phiwayinkosi Thamsanqa Nhleko) is a South African politician. He has served the country in several capacities notably as the Minister of Public works. He occupied the position for a year after starting on 31 March 2017 and leaving in late February 2018. 

He has also served as the SA Minister of Police. Nhleko has served as chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration in parliament.

He also occupied the position of the chairperson of the ruling party ANC caucus. And also African National Congress chief whip and member of the Judicial Service Commission.

Qualification

He has a background in education, Mr. Nhleko attended the Graduate Institute of Management and Technology. From the institution, he graduated with a Diploma in Labour law.

Positions

He has served under several memberships until date including at the;

  • African National Congress.
  • Standing Committee on Finance (National Assembly Committees) ( March 2018 – May 2019).
  • National Assembly (Parliament) (May 2014 – May 2019).

As a minister, he has held notable positions in the country including the minister of;

  • Public Works at National Executive (Executive) (March 2017 – February 2018).
  • Police at National Executive (Executive) (May 2014 – March 2017.

Wife

The Citizen reported in 2016, that the former police minister was set to pay lobola and marry a woman he cheated on his wife with.

This followed after he sent his wife packing from their marital home a few weeks earlier. The report further covered that he had paid Dr. Nomcebo Mthembu‘s lobola. They were secretly having their wedding plans since his wife Nothando Nkomo had not given them her blessings.

The report covered that the politician had earlier paid lobola for seven other women. He later either left the relationship or divorced them. 

Nathi Nhleko got married to Thelani Nhleko, their marriage ended in divorce. Later, he married and divorced Khabo Sithole in 2002. He later got married and divorced Smangele Ngobese in 2008.

Career

The renowned politician has held notable positions through which he has made an impact on the country.

He has served as the head of the special anti-corruption unit, Department of Public Service and Administration. He has also held the position of deputy municipal manager for uMhlathuze Municipality.

Mr. Nhleko has also served as the regional commissioner for the Department of Correctional Services, KZN. He also occupied the position of Member of Parliament (MP) for eleven years (1994 to 2005).

During his days as an MP, he held several notable positions. He served as the Chairperson of the ad hoc Committee on Funding of Represented Political Parties.

He was also the ANC Chief Whip and served as Chairperson of the ANC Caucus. Mr. Nhleko also made an impact through the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration.

He was also a member of the Judicial Services Commission. In 2011, he was appointed as the Director-General in the Department of Labour.

On 26 May 2014, he became the South African Minister of Police, after a three-year service he left the position in March 2017.
