Pirates and Sundowns have, in the past, been known to do transfer dealings with one another, despite being rivals, who also compete for similar targets.

Pirates and Sundowns interested in Mokwana

Recently Pirates have been able to sign Kermit Erasmus and also get Lesedi Kapinga on a free transfer. Now they’re reportedly set to go head to head for one of the DStv Premiership’s more impressive stars. The player in question is Sekhukhune United’s speedster Elias Mokwana. This publication reported last week that, the Buccaneers are trying to move quickly to tie up a deal for the player, but now according to FARPost, they will have competition from defending champions Sundowns.

“I know Pirates have been pushing too hard for Mokwana’s signature. But Sundowns have shown an interest. They want him, Now, the problem is that his club asks for too much money, and Sundowns feel the price is too much to ask for a player like him.” Said a source to the same publication.

The player has had a sterling season thus far for Ba Bina Noko, to such an extent that he caught the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who has him in his standby list for the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast this month. Now Pirates and Sundowns have also set their sights on Mokwana and even if he isn’t required at the continental showpiece, he might be seen wearing different colours by the time the local league resumes in the middle of February.

It would also be interesting to see if Sekhukhune would be willing to negotiate an exit for one of their key players, in the middle of the season. Mokwana has featured 48 times for the Limpopo outfit and scored four goals with six assists.
