Kaizer Chiefs suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Chiefs came into this game against Stellenbosch on the back of another disappointing result in Cape Town.

There, they played to a goalless draw against Cape Town City, even though they had the better of the chances. Against Stellenbosch, Chiefs hardly created anything of substance in the game and while the visitors took their one big chance. On the balance of play, it was probably them who had the better of the chances, controlled the game and deserved to win.

That victory now sees Stellenbosch eight points ahead of Chiefs, with a game in hand. That, all but ending Amakhosi’s realistic chances of finishing second and playing CAF Champions League football next season. With that being said, interim coach Cavin Johnson tore into his players for that display.

Johnson angry with Chiefs players

“The players need to be better technically. There were of moments …. you have to pass the ball better. You are 1-0 down after 45 minutes, you have to be confident, you are Chiefs, play proper football. That was very disturbing from my players. I thought the performance we put on tonight was not even half of what we had on Saturday. What can I say, we have to go back and try again to put different players on the pitch and see what happens. We just didn’t get it right. I am not happy with the performance of a lot of players, but we have to fix it … and come back. We have another game against Chippa (Chiefs play the Chili Boyz in East London on Saturday). We need the points more than any other team in the PSL.” He said to SuperSport TV as per The Citizen.

Changes promised for next game

If that statement is anything to go by, some players may have played themselves out of the team. It will be interesting to see how different Johnson’s line up looks when Chiefs take on Chippa United on Saturday.
