A video filmed on a cellphone by a motorist in Zimbabwe shows a bus and petrol tanker ‘dicing’ on a narrow, poorly tarred section of road. The bus, transporting passengers from South Africa to Zimbabwe, attempts to overtake the petrol tanker.

The bizarre incident was caught on camera and uploaded onto SA Trucker’s social media platforms.

BUS AND PETROL TANKER ‘DICING’ SPELLS TROUBLE FOR FELLOW MOTORISTS

According to the organisation, the incident took place on the Beitbridge – Masvingo highway. The squabble between the bus driver and petrol tanker driver results in a motorist in the oncoming lane needing to take evasive action.

The driver of the car in the incoming lane comes to a halt on the shoulder of the road and is squeezed by the bus and tanker.

ROAD SAFETY AND MAINTAINING A GOOD FOLLOWING DISTANCE IS VITAL

Road safety advocacy group Arrive Alive says all road users should learn defensive driving techniques.

Arrive Alive mentions these three important rules:

  • Reducing the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, adverse conditions or the mistakes of others.
  • Implementing driving techniques that enable drivers to address identified hazards in a predictable manner.
  • Driving with an increased awareness of everything happening around you while driving.
  • Driving characterised by prudence, diligence and reasonable cautiousness with the goal of making the road a safe place not only for a defensive driver but also for other road users.

We have to drive within our ability. Elderly drivers are good at using their experience to compensate for lack of physical strength, reduced eyesight, hearing etc. They drive defensively by adjusting their time of travel and where they drive, Arrive Alive says.
