How did you begin your acting career?
My name is Rukayya Ahmad Aliyu, but I’m better known as Rukky Alim in Kannywood. I am from the Jalingo LGA in Taraba State.
I traveled to Kano to be with my sister. Although Kano is known as the industry’s hub, I have a friend who was formerly employed in the field.
I became interested in her work and informed her of it after observing how and what she was teaching and enlightening people.
She claimed she would put me in touch with people in the sector and encouraged me to get permission.
Upon asking, my parents fortunately agreed with the concept and just counseled me to always act morally.
That was my entry into the field.
Next, I went up to actor Garzali Miko and explained my situation.
All industry operations were suspended as the industry was under lockdown.
He contacted me when the lockdown was partially lifted, offering me a role in his film “Kaddarata.” All I can say now is, so far, so good. I give thanks to God for my current level of success.
Was “Kaddarata” the first film you ever made?
Indeed. It was the first film I ever saw. Garzali Miko, who is also the film’s executive producer, and I worked together on the acting.
However, people are more familiar with you because of how well-known you were in music videos.
No. I began with movies, but as you might imagine, during the lockdown, a lot of people viewed videos on the internet. And at that time, more people knew me. They believed that I began with a music video because of this.
Could you show us a few of your films?
They’re not that many. However, In da ranka, Inda rai, Gwarama by Abubakar Bashir Maishadda, Haram, and Sanda are the most popular among them. Because of my part in the highly popular web serial Haram, people began to talk about me.
If you were to pick one, which of your films is your favorite?
To tell the truth, I have acted in important roles in every television show and film that I have appeared to date. So I’m at a loss for choice. I adore each one of them, as well as the parts I performed in each one.
The responses and reviews I receive from fans are incredible. In reality, it would not be fair if I selected each one as my best given the responses I received. But maybe my supporters will choose one for me.
What’s the secret that you used to become the talk of the town and gain prominence so quickly?
(Laugh). I’m not sure. I’m new, yet I’ve had significant roles in several big-budget films. I am not sure why; maybe it is just my fate, as I am not superior to anyone else. However, one thing is certain—I always give whatever I’m doing my all and my all. Is that one of the factors, maybe?
Which is your favorite among the music videos you were in?
Yes, “Ba zan yi Butulci ba” by Garzali Miko is the one I have in this category.
And why is it your favorite?
It’s just something I like. I don’t know why, but when I have free time, I always watch the music video and I always feel like I love the song.
How did you come by Alim?
Our family name is that one. It’s not a prank.
Everyone entered the sector with a different set of goals; what are yours?
In my opinion, there is only one person to thank: God. I was unknown when I entered the profession, but in northern Nigeria and other Hausa-speaking nations, I am now well-liked and well-known. What more could I possibly need? Sincerely, I can claim that I’ve accomplished what I set out to do. I have no particular goals in mind, other than maybe continuing to live in harmony and peace with others, but I will keep working hard as long as I am employed in this field.
Do you not have any plans to work as a director or producer?
That’s not my plan, and I doubt I’ll pursue that direction in my filmmaking. But I have no idea what the future has in store for me. All I can do is hope and pray for success.
Could you play a part in Nollywood films?
Indeed. I’ll have to watch the plot first, but I can act in Nollywood films. I can only play in a film that won’t negatively impact me in any manner. These days, Nollywood and Kannywood actors co-star in several films.
Why, in your opinion, do Nollywood films do better than Kannywood productions?
With two distinct target markets, they belong to two distinct industries. There are thus distinctions between the two.
You acted in two well-known films focused on hooliganism, Haram and Sanda. Do you enjoy performing in films of this kind?
I engage in every category. The pure love story “Kaddarata” was my first cinematic experience. Dabanci flicks also contain love stories.
You are aware that you shouldn’t be picky as an actress. An actor of quality should be able to play any role well. Being adaptable is what defines a skilled performer.
While I was a doctor in Sanda, I was a spy in a gang organization in Haram.
However, it appears from Sanda that you brought him to your home because you are so much in love with him.
He doesn’t have my heart. My spouse works as a police officer. He assisted me in Season 1, as you may recall, so I brought him to my house for treatment when I noticed him hurt, and that was that. All I wanted to do was repay him.
And the fact that my husband, a police officer, was hunting for him and happened to run into him at his residence made for a nice situation.
Do you want to convey something to your fellow workers?
I want us all to be more unified and considerate of one another, particularly our more senior colleagues. The development will be easier to see when there is unity.
Given the current state of affairs and the amount of money and effort our producers are investing in our productions, I anticipate Kannywood shortly to be in the running with major international film studios.
All we need to do to advance to that level is have talented performers. All that needs to happen is time.
What about your fans’ message?
I cherish every one of them. I find great meaning in them. I’m seeing their words of love and concern. I pledge to keep entertaining them, but I can’t respond to them all on social media. I sincerely appreciate them. I promise not to let them down.
