Career

About her husband, Phillip Ronald Gould, June Gould was graded by the Penrith club in 1976 and spent two years in the lower grades before becoming a regular first-grader in 1979.
Following the retirement of Penrith’s star player Mike Stephenson, the 20-year-old Gould was selected as captain of the Panthers, making him the youngest New South Wales Rugby League premiership captain since Dave Brown in the 1930s.
Gould’s career was hampered by injury troubles, particularly an eye injury that posed a risk of retina separation. He moved to the Newtown club in 1981, where he played under Warren Ryan’s innovative coaching. Newtown made the 1981 Grand Final that year, though they lost to Parramatta.
Gould then signed with the Canterbury club in 1983, where he was regarded as an astute ball-playing forward. He missed out on City’s Firsts selection in 1984 due to an ankle injury sustained just before the team was announced.
Gould had a successful coaching career, winning premierships with Canterbury in 1988 and Penrith in 1991. He also coached Penrith to the 1990 Grand Final.
After leaving Penrith, he took over the struggling Sydney City Roosters in 1995 and oversaw a long rebuilding phase. He helped them become consistent semi-finalists from 1996 to 2004, including Grand Final appearances in 2000, 2002, and 2003.
