To promote environmentally-responsible waste disposal, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has created mini dump sites for its residents.
Residents are encouraged to utilise these facilities for organic or garden waste, to prevent it from being mixed with domestic waste destined for landfill sites.
Mixing garden waste with regular garbage can contribute to the release of methane – a harmful greenhouse gas.
To streamline waste collection, only domestic waste placed in the standard 240L wheelie bins will be collected by refuse removal vehicles according to the scheduled refuse removal calendar.
Residents who have not yet received their 240L wheelie bins have been urged by the CoE to visit their nearest waste management depot for assistance.
No cost to use dump sites
The city’s Department of Waste Management Services strategically located the mini dump sites within or near residential areas for convenience.
These sites are accessible at no additional cost to residents.
In addition to using the mini dump sites, residents are encouraged to compost their garden waste. Composting not only reduces the volume of waste sent to dump sites, but also creates nutrient-rich fertiliser that can be reused in home gardens.
Operating hours
The mini dump sites are open seven days a week, including public holidays, with the exception of Christmas Day. To account for seasonal changes in daylight, the operational hours are adjusted as follows:
April to September (Winter Hours): 07:00 – 18:00
October to March (Summer Hours): 07:00 – 19:00

LIST of Ekurhuleni public pools open for summer
In related news, Ekurhuleni residents may be eager to know which public swimming pools have reopened for the summer.
Historically, the CoE’s swimming pools have reopened on 1 September to mark Spring Day.
However, maintenance challenges, budget constraints and vandalism have prevented the COE from meeting its commitments in the past, writes the Boksburg Advertiser.
According to the publication, some pools were expected to reopen on time, while there might be delays with others. Read more on that story here.
Will these sites address the issue of illegal dumping?
