Professional sports fanatic Mama Joy — real name Joy Chauke — has become a beloved and somewhat controversial part of the country’s sports celebrations. In the recent past, she has faced criticism over accepting money and perks to support the country’s sports teams. Despite this, she continues to travel around the world, ever ready to wave the South African flag from the stands.

This month, Mama Joy has enjoyed watching and rooting for Bafana Bafana as they compete in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In fact, she has done such a good job, that she was named “Fan of the match”. Heading online, she proudly celebrated the accomplishment.

Halala! Mama Joy wins Fan of the Match

In October last year, Mama Joy faced backlash after social media users learned that she was getting paid to support the Springboks who were competing in the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Many were even more irked after hearing that state taxes were being used to fund her various trips around the world in support of the country’s sports teams.

While many demanded to know exactly how much of the country’s taxes were going towards her expenses, others supported her trip and loved how well she was representing the country.

It would appear that she is doing something right after she won an award during last week’s Afcon match between Morocco and South Africa.

Taking to X earlier this week, the famous sports supporter shared that she walked away from the night a recipient of the Fan of The Match title.

“Congratulations to Mama Joy of South Africa ⁦. Afcon, thank you Bafana Bafana,” wrote tagging President Ramaphosa, Minister Zizi Kodwa and Bafana Bafana.

In the comment section many celebrated Mama Joy and her win. Others, however, blasted her for “tooting” her own horn.

“congratulations for what? Yet another holiday at our tax payers expense?” one person asked, while another wrote:

“Mama Africa, the one who brings Joy to everything.”
