Banyana Banyana fans have called for the sacking of coach Desiree Ellis after the team failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.

The South African women’s national football team, were left heartbroken as their dreams of qualifying for the Olympics were crushed after a goalless draw against Nigeria in the second leg of the final stage qualifier at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night. The Super Falcons secured their spot for the Olympic Games in France t with a 1-0 aggregate score.

Nigeria secured a 1-0 over Banyana at the Miko Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Friday giving them an advantage.

Ellis’s charges needed a win to at least force the match into extra-time but failed to convert their chances. The 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) looked toothless for the most part and never looked like scoring. They were unable to break down Nigeria’s resilient defence thus the match ended 0-0.

Banyana’s Olympic hopes have been dashed for the second time in a row, which could put the future of their long-serving coach, Desiree Ellis, in question.

It remains to be seen what lies ahead for the team and their coach, but fans have made their voices clear. Before the Olympics qualifiers, many called Desiree Ellis to be sacked during Banyana’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The team played well reaching the last 16 which silenced some critics.
